Award-Winning packaging insert streamlines Kamstrup’s field service

Smart, flexible packaging solution protects small, valuable components for field technicians

Kamstrup needed a practical, sustainable way to help field technicians organize and transport small but critical components. In partnership with Smurfit Westrock, the company developed a two-layer insert designed to improve efficiency, durability and ease of use in daily field service operations, while keeping components organized and protected during transport.

The Challenge

Kamstrup, a global leader in intelligent metering solutions for water, heat and electricity, needed an efficient way to organize and transport numerous small but valuable components. The packaging had to support field technicians in their daily work by being durable, flexible and easy to access. Sustainability was also a key requirement, with a strong focus on recyclability.

The Approach

To address these challenges, Smurfit Westrock partnered with Kamstrup to develop a packaging solution tailored for field operations. The design features a durable outer box with a two-layer insert system. Each insert can hold up to 36 components, allowing a total of 72 parts to be stored securely. The inserts use an accordion-style folding mechanism, enabling fast assembly in one simple motion that takes only seconds, while ensuring safe, organized and ergonomic access to components.

The Result

The new packaging solution delivers clear improvements in service efficiency. Technicians can now store, transport and access components faster and with less effort, significantly reducing packing time compared with conventional packaging systems. Made entirely from corrugated cardboard, the packaging is recyclable, aligning with Kamstrup’s sustainability goals while protecting sensitive electronic components.
